I found this vintage scale in Wellsboro, PA during our trip to camp. Wellsboro is a beautiful town that still uses gas lit street lamps. There are a few antique stores in town, some outdoor stores, and a really great little candy shop. Other than candy, this scale was my only purchase in Wellsboro.
After getting home I did a little research on this scale. The Pelouze Manufacturing Company is still in business out of Chicago. It was started in 1900 by a guy who was interested in postage scales. This “family scale” is from the 30’s or 40’s. I thought it was interesting because of the color (duh) but also because it has either a patent number or item number stamped onto it. It seems that the 24 lb scale is more common. They also made a 30 lb scale which was less common.
I paid $22 for the scale. Some of the numbers are gone and were “replaced” with sharpie. I want to see if I can get the sharpie numbers off. I found this selling online for $50 – $75! I think I got a good deal!
